1. Hospitals

People come to Mexico for a number of activities: sunbathing, fishing, honeymooning, and pyramid-hiking are just some of the better known (and the most photographed).

Americans and Canadians are almost universally surprised by the quality of the private hospital services in Mexico.

Take the chain Hospital Angeles for instance. This is Mexico’s largest hospital group and they operate 20 hospitals around the country (including one in Tijuana, where Americans constitute 40% of their clientele). They plan to increase the number by 15 more hospitals over the next few years.

A patient entering an emergency room at a Hospital Angeles facility usually waits no longer than 10 minutes. The doctors are consummate professionals, and most speak fluent English.

For a less severe malady, patients usually spend less than 30 minutes total inside the emergency room doors and a bill for maybe $40 or $50 dollars.

Another chain with some big muscle behind it is Grupo Star Medica, which is aiming to put itself at the head of the growing market for medical tourism. Star Medica and Carlos Slim, one of the world’s richest men, are partnering to build hospitals that will focus on foreign patients. The group already has a center in Juarez–across the border from El Paso, Texas–and is planning new hospitals in northern locations like Tijuana, Mexicali, and Monterrey.

Hospital San Jose, a Monterrey-based operation that was profiled by Bloomberg News, has performed everything from heart transplants to gastric banding. More than 90 percent of the doctors there have worked in the United States or Europe, which has helped make Hospital San Jose one of the most prestigious hospitals in Mexico.

But it doesn’t really matter where you go; there are first-rate medical centers from Mexico City to Guadalajara, from Tijuana to Cancun. If you’re in a Mexican city, health care shouldn’t be on your mind.

2. Doctors

Doctors in Mexico are highly trained medical practitioners and spend many years studying and training before they receive their license to practice medicine.

You will find a different culture of medicine in Mexico compared with the United States. In Mexico, you will find that most doctors will take more time with you and they will make sure you understand what they are prescribing to treat your illness. You can still find doctors that will make house calls if that is necessary.

Mexico is famous for its medical schools and many American and Canadian doctors have studied here. Many Mexican doctors have spent time in the United States doing their internships there and they speak both English and Spanish.

3. Dentists

Going to Mexico for dental care is becoming increasingly popular for people who are looking to have dental work at a fraction of the price they would have to pay in the United States.

All of the larger Mexican border cities are attracting patients from the United States and the rest of the world because of the high quality of care and the low cost that is charged compared to the United States.
