Like most of the world Mexico has adopted a legal system composed of three branches of government: Legislative, Judicial and Executive branches. The fundamental difference between Mexico and the United States’ legal system is that Mexican law is based on the “Napoleonic code” which is very different from what you will find in the United States. The priority of importance and enforcement starts with federal law, then state law and finally local municipal law. Laws will differ from state to state and municipality to municipality. We recommend that if you are new to Mexico and need to obtain legal assistance or advice that you once again do your homework and take the time to find the right attorney for your situation. In Mexico there is no shortage of attorneys that are willing to help you with your legal needs. What we have found is finding the right attorney in Mexico, just like anywhere in the world, can be a challenge.
