The Rosarito-Ensenada bicycle ride, a tradition in Baja California, will start in front of the Rosarito Beach Hotel on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The event has been held since 1980 (twice a year since 1987) and has become an important tourism indicator for the state. For years the ride drew largely U.S. participants, but that proportion plummeted to as low as 5 percent by spring 2008 as U.S. tourism fell sharply for a variety of reasons. Organizer Gary Foster said he has seen the numbers climb back up slowly; he expects about 20 percent of Saturday’s estimated 4,000 riders to come from north of the border.
Registration is $40 for riders who have not preregistered. Ride numbers can be purchased in Rosarito on the day of the race.
