The people of Merida in Yucatan, Mexico, soon will have access to 40 dialysis units thanks to a unique four-way partnership led by Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, with support from the community’s leadership, Project C.U.R.E. and the Bridge of Life Foundation.
For the past two years, the College of Osteopathic Medicine, in conjunction with MSU’s Institute of International Health, has been working with leaders in Yucatan’s health system to develop clinical programs that impact the health and safety of its 6 million inhabitants, as well as people in surrounding states and the countries of Belize and Guatemala.
The project is one of several initiatives, including a hyperbaric chamber and a family practice clinic, the MSU osteopathic school is organizing in this community.
A 14-bed dialysis unit was dedicated Sept. 3 at the Hospital General Agustin O’Horan in Merida. Yucatan Governor Ivonne Ortega Pacheco, as part of her annual address to the people the evening before, also presented the college an award.
