Program for Tijuana's Ninth Street Opera Festival

 — Opera takes center stage Saturday in one of Tijuana’s oldest neighborhoods, Colonia Libertad. The ninth edition of Opera en la Calle, the city’s annual street opera festival, begins at noon and ends at midnight on Calle Quinta (Fifth Street) near the corner of Avenida Aquiles Serdán. There is no admission charge, and free transportation is offered from the Pueblo Amigo Hotel on the hour starting at 2 p.m.

The following is a listing of performances on the main stage:

4:30 p.m.: Procession from Verdi’s opera “A Masked Ball” performed by students of the Lux Boreal dance ensemble and the Instituto Tecnológico de Tijuana.

5:00 p.m.: Finale of Act II of Verdi’s “Aida” performed by the Coro Sulaly Dorate of the Iglesia Luz del Mundo. Oxana Bulgakova, piano; Salvador Castro, director.

5:45 p.m. Sinfonica Juvenil de Tijuana, Pavel Getman, conductor.

6:15 p.m.: A performance of Menotti’s short opera, “The Medium.” Performed by Carolina Orozco (mezzo-soprano), Yara Soto (soprano), Zully Martínez (soprano), Angel Osuna (bass), Judy Chirino (soprano), and actor Gonzálo García. With Fernando Landeros, piano.

7 p.m.: Russian dances performed by the dance ensemble from the Preparatoria Lázaro Cardenas and directed by Fernando López Maldonado.

7:30 p.m.: Mollicone’s one-act opera, “The Face on the Barroom Floor.” With Oxana Bulgakova (piano), Norma Navarette (soprano), Jonathan Cerebros (tenor), Luvi Avendaño (baritone).

8:15 p.m.: Orff’s Carmina Burana Suite, Op. 2. Performed by the Ensamble Lírico Juvenil led by José Medina.

9:00 p.m.: Selections from Les Miserables. Accompanied by pianist Jorge Villalobos and with stage direction by Gabriela Rodríguez. Performances by Coro Sacri Cordis Jesu, Gabriela Rodríguez, Ernesto Miranda, Miguel Zazueta, Raquel Meneses and Ezequiel Ojeda.

9:45 p.m.: Final scene of Act II of the Puccini opera “Tosca” with Aiko Yamada on piano and stage direction by José Medina. Performed by soprano María Lozano, baritone Salvador Padilla.

10:30 p.m.: Members of the Lux Boreal dance ensemble perform Stravinsky’s dance cantata “Les Noces.”

11:00 p.m.: Selections from Bizet’s “Carmen,” Mozart’s “Cosi fan tutte,” Verdi’s “Il trovatore,” Rossini’s “Don Carlo,” and Puccini’s “Turandot.” With Encarnación Vázquez (mezzo soprano), Gabriela Rodríguez (soprano), Carlos Galván (tenor). With the Tijuana Camerata.
