Having a car accident is stressful no matter where it happens. When it happens in a foreign country, you want to know what you should do so that you follow the law and do not compound the problem. First of all, it is important that you have insurance from a reputable insurance company in Mexico.

Free Online Mexico Auto Insurance Quote In English

In Mexico, you are required to have liability insurance that covers the other motorist and their vehicle. You should purchase a policy before you drive into Mexico and that is done easily online. If you do not have access to a computer and the Internet you can secure a policy over the telephone or at most border crossings on the United States side.

If you have an accident you will want to follow this advice:

  • Do not leave the scene of the accident.

  • Call your insurance company's 800# and leave your information.

  • Do not leave the vehicle unattended.

  • Complete an accident report when the police arrive.*

  • Do not make personal agreements with the other driver.*

  • Do not offer or give money to anyone.

  • Do not leave Mexico without reporting the accident.

Preventing an accident is the ideal situation.  "Don’t drink and drive" is true anywhere but especially in Mexico.

Driving at night should be avoided whenever possible because this is when most accidents occur. Driving short distances in town is safe, but if you’re not familiar with the long-distance road, only drive at night if necessary. We realize that some U.S. insurance companies claim to provide coverage in Mexico. We highly recommend that you speak to your insurance company before crossing because we have found most of them have restrictions and limitations to the coverage they offer.

IMPORTANT: Just because your insurance company provides you coverage in Mexico does not mean that the Mexican authorities will honor your U.S. coverage. What this means is if you do not have the ability to prove your coverage or have a local Baja insurance representative you will have to pay out of your pocket if it is found you are at fault.

Mexico car insurance is very affordable and easily attainable online. We suggest it is better to be safe than sorry.
