Dear Friend:
Several months ago, I wrote with news that I had joined Senator Dianne Feinstein in writing to the Administration in support of a presidential permit for the proposed Otay Mesa East Port of Entry in San Diego. I am pleased to let you know that Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte has signed the presidential permit. Following a short waiting period, it will become fully effective and the next steps to develop the new port can go forward. The new port of entry will be developed two miles east of the current Otay Mesa Port of Entry.
This new port of entry offers to alleviate congestion and accommodate future trade and growth, while maintaining the highest level of security. It is estimated that the economic impacts to California from the new port of entry will exceed $31 billion over the first ten years of operation, with electronics, machinery and manufacturing industries receiving the largest benefit.
This significant approval came about because of the concerted efforts of so many people in the County of San Diego and at Caltrans. I commend everyone for working together to accomplish this significant step and look forward to working with them as this process continues.
Sincerely,
Barbara Boxer
United States Senator
