New International Airport in the Rosarito-Ensenada Area
Thanks to the National Infrastructure Plan presented by President Felipe Calderon, an international airport will be built in Ensenada. Construction is expected to begin on the first quarter of 2008 and initial investment is estimated at around $230 million dollars. The airstrip will be able to receive large aircraft including the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 747. International flights to Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, Tokyo, Frankfurt and Bogotá are planned.
It will have both a Domestic and an International Terminal and a very long 9,900 feet single runway and spare land for a second parallel one with an elevation of 1,100 feet. The principal client will be the cargo company DHL.
It will be serving the over 600,000 population of the northern part of the municipality of Ensenada and the municipality of Rosarito with an appeal to the southern area of Tijuana (Playas de Tijuana) which will not have to go across the mountains and Downtown Tijuana to TIJ.
