Whether you are traveling on vacation or permanently moving to Mexico, you may want medical insurance and the best way to get it is through a private insurance company.
Mexico has only 2 options for medical insurance.
- Insurance for state/public and corporate workers.
- Private voluntary health insurance.
Instituto Mexicano Del Seguro Social (IMSS), is a program providing health care to workers and their families. This government program not only provides medical benefits but disability insurance, retirement insurance and subsidized housing.
IMSS covers approximately 80% of the beneficiaries employed by the private sector. For the people working in the government and state, there is the ISSSTE (Instituto de Seguridad Servicios Sociales para los Trabajadores Del Estado).
If you are a foreigner working in Mexico, you can ask your employer to enroll you in IMSS where you will receive some of their benefits, such as medical and disability services but you won’t be able to apply for housing subsidies. Mexico has allowed retirees and other visiting residents to buy the IMSS coverage. They base the cost on what the payment would be if you were working full time at minimum wages.
When you apply for IMSS, you fill out a questionnaire and you answer general health questions and health history questions. There are some preexisting conditions that would prevent you from coverage by IMSS. The official IMSS government site is at: http://www.imss.gob.mx
Expatriates can have private insurance provided by their employers or by themselves. Private insurance providers are top of the range medical centers and clinics.
If you are traveling for a short period of time, traveler’s insurance coverage is a good option; this can be for a minimum of 15 days to a maximum of 2 years.
