I have been in the real estate business for over 40 years and what I am about to suggest today is completely different than what I would have told you 10 years ago. In today’s world the Internet dominates business and keeping that in mind I want you to consider this. Is it really necessary to hire a listing agent to sell your home?
I just talked to a friend of mine that recently sold his house and I asked him why he listed it with a real estate agent. His answer was “that was the way I thought I was supposed to do it”. His house was over a million dollars so that cost him over $40,000 in commissions. And he is a smart man.
I want to help you to understand the world today as I see it. I remember hearing Bill Gates say in the 1990s “if you don’t have a website today in five years you will be out of business”. While that may not have been 100% true, it almost is.
So I am telling you that the way real estate is being sold today will not be the way real estate will be sold in five years. We all know that the Internet has changed the world and in business you either keep up or you will be left behind.
I think the first phase of the latest evolution in real estate will be the elimination of the listing agent. Property owners will see the benefits of being their own listing agent because the Internet will show their property to interested buyers and the owner will save a lot of money by being their own agent.
